'The Casting Director' is a crime noir thriller about Lee Hamill whose speciality is finding unknowns on the streets of Dublin for low budget Irish movies. He’s the middleman, matchmaker and awkward buffer zone between performer and producer. Lee is HR for actors, but one of them wants him dead.
The Casting Director eBook Nick McGinley
I had no idea that the world of a casting director could be so gritty and far removed from the Hollywood glamour you'd expect to find. It's a very interesting way to present a story as not many will have any knowledge at all of casting and the various things that go on behind the scenes in the film industry. For this reason the interest for the reader is two-fold; how unknowns are discovered and what the hell is going on in Lee Hamill's life. It's a bit of a roller coaster and the fast moving nature of the story makes it a very compelling read.
Definitely one to add to your reading list and after reading it myself in double-quick time (it's one of those 'just another chapter before bed' kind of books) I'm looking forward to the author's next novel.

The Casting Director eBook Nick McGinley Reviews
A darkly funny noir set in the seedy world of filmmaking, this brisk, enjoyable read is well worth your time. It's seems written by someone who knows that world, so it's particularly entertaining for people interested in the entertainment industry. .
Nick McGinley's novel fits into the underappreciated category of the "occupational noir", in which tropes of the genre are applied to characters who aren't gumshoes. In this case, the setting is that of the Irish film and theatre industry. The protagonist, Lee Hamill, is a jaded, somewhat garrulous casting director who begins receiving mysterious death threats, thus unfurling a skein of paranoid encounters with the people in his professional life--a quirky assortment of high-maintenance child actors, Eurotrash directors, acting-school hucksters, thwarted writers, idiot TV stars...and so many more!
McGinley knows this world inside and out and mines it for both humor and psychological insight. This is a fast-paced and highly readable novel that takes readers behind the curtain of the entertainment world--both its seamy and its workaday side--and, almost incidentally, gives a tour of the Dublin that tourists seldom see. Good stuff.
