"A Towering Novel!
Chuck Culverâs Best Work
Retired doctor David Somerset, grief-stricken with the recent loss of his beloved wife, is trying painfully to follow through with plans they both made to the English Cotswolds and to restore a 600 hundred year old cottage. Although he makes friends with a number of colorful locals in the town of Winchcomb, he is still agonizing over his loss. Then rescue arrives in the form of a mysterious metal box a workman finds in the walls of his cottage. Inside the box, straight from the 16th century, is a rare Tyndale Bible, the first English translation of the Scriptures and the cause of Thomas Tyndaleâs branding as a heretic by the Catholic Church and his burning at the stake. Also enclosed is the diary of a hitherto unknown priest named Father Christopher Moore, who was Tyndaleâs best friend and later a chaplain in the court of Henry VIII. The Calm in the Late Afternoon is one of those novels that is more than a read. Itâs a joyful emersion in life.

"The Calm in the Late Afternoon" appears to be an undiscovered gem. I read a lot and it wasn't until someone in my book group put this on our list for April that I had even heard of the author. Especially surprising since he lives in the same area I do. However I had managed to miss this book/author, I am so glad that situation has been rectified. Our protagonist is Dr. David Somerset, who has recently moved to the village of Winchcomb in the English Cotswolds. He and his wife had purchased a 600-year-old cottage (using that term loosely based upon sheer size) and their plan was to move to Winchcomb, renovate the cottage, and live out their retirement years in this beautiful area. His wife, Lillian, dies before this dream can be realized but David feels compelled to follow through with their dream and thinks it may also help him deal with his grief. As the renovation is underway, a metal box is discovered which appears to contain a Tynedale Bible and a journal written by a Catholic priest who was someone involved in this first English translation of the bible. As the story progresses, we are privy to Dr. Somerset's present-day life and how he is adjusting to such a huge number of life changes. We are also treated to the reading of the journal from the early 1500s as the mystery is unraveled.
This novel for me was a perfect read. I have spent a limited amount of time in the area where the story is set and have to say that the writing is beautiful. Mr. Culver is able to bring the area alive in my mind's eye as well as the charm of the village and its inhabitants. The historical aspect of the novel is totally fascinating and how the pieces fit together of what happened all those many years ago kept me turning pages and eager to know what happened next.
For fans of gentle English reads, this is a must. For fans of historical fiction, particularly in the period around Henry VIII's reign, this is a must. When you put those two together for me, I felt like I was given the rare privilege of spending many enjoyable hours immersed in a truly wonderful novel.
Bottom line: I highly recommend it.
ETA on 4/11/2012: My book group met last night and we had the longest discussion we can ever remember having about any book. All of us were in agreement that it was a wonderful novel and had so much to offer. One of us is Jewish, one Lutheran, and one Catholic (converted when she married). The historical portions of what was going on during the Reformation and how well the author dealt with this topic --- which could have been sticky given our varying religious traditions -- was widely agreed upon. We have had a string of great books recently and we added this one to the list. The other book we thought had some similarities to this one was "People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks.
